South Building, home to the University’s administration, has been the site of dozens of student protests, rallies, and sit-ins over the decades. The plaza behind South Building which faces Polk Place has been a space in recent years for rallies and speak-outs, including those held by the Real Silent Sam Coalition, the BCC Movement, the On the Wake of Emancipation Campaign, and the Black Student Movement. The photograph depicts a protest led by members of the BSM on behalf of Dr. Sonja Haynes Stone, who had recently been denied tenure despite her strong academic record.
