On Friday nights through the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Great Hall in the Frank Porter Graham Student Union was a space for parties, largely attended by Black students, providing an important space in which members of diverse Black student organizations could come together to socialize. Black students from other local colleges often attended these parties, raising the suspicions of white administrators, who made accusations of violence at the parties, and eventually, the parties were cancelled.
