Document Description: The On the Wake of Emancipation Campaign was created by Kristi Booker, the president of the Black Student Movement. OWEC was created largely in response to the publication of a David Horowitz editorial which ran in The Daily Tar Heel as an advertisement, titled “Ten Reasons Why Reparations for Slavery is a Bad Idea–And Racist Too.” Catalyzed by the University’s lack of response to the Horowitz editorial, OWEC developed a list of fourteen demands and on April 2nd, 2001 marched from Saunders Hall to South Building, delivering the list of demands to Provost Robert Shelton.
