Saunders Hall

This Is What Saunders Would Do To Me

Document Description: In the spring semester of 2015, members of the Real Silent Sam Coalition began to rally not just to remove Saunders’ name from the building, but to rename the building Hurston Hall, in honor of Zora Neale Hurston. In this photograph from February, Black students use visual demonstration to draw in viewers, invoking the symbol of the noose from the 1999 decoration of Saunders Hall by Students Seeking Historical Truth.
